Next, the Wildcats encounter the Clayton Comets (Clayton, NC) in a non-league challenge, on Wednesday, August 16. West Johnston will attempt to move on its 0-1 season record. The Comets come into the challenge with a 1-1 record after their 3-1 non-league loss to Heritage (Wake Forest, NC).
Match Summary
The West Johnston Lady Wildcats opened their 2023 season with a hard fought loss tonight against a Garner team that had some talented girls with high school experience. The Wildcat girls fought valiantly, jumping out to a big early lead in the first set, only to see the Lady Trojans fight back from an 8 - 18 deficit to scratch out the 25 - 23 win. West showed nice bounce-back in the second set, again jumping out to a good lead and then finishing off the Trojan girls by a 25 - 20 score to knot the set score at 1 - 1. The third set was again tight indeed, with the Garner team finding a way to somehow edge out the West girls by another 25 - 23 score. During those tense moments at the end of the set, Garner seemed to have things to go their way by playing scrappy defense while maintaining aggressiveness in its attacking. Garner finished things off in a strong manner in the fourth with the 25 - 15 finishing score. Still, West will take many positives away from this tough loss.
