On Saturday, Berkeley didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Portland, but they still walked away with a 42-37 win. Given Berkeley's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 28th in South Carolina, while Portland is ranked 230th in Tennessee), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Berkeley was led to victory by Imani Levey and Kennedy Caldwell. Levey scored ten points, while Caldwell scored eight points along with three steals. Caldwell is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. Riley Guerry was another key contributor, scoring three points along with three steals.
Berkeley has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season. As for Portland, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Berkeley and Goose Creek will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 5th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Goose Creek is on a four-game streak of home wins, Berkeley a six-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season)-- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Portland is on the road again on Friday and play against East Robertson at 6:00 p.m. on January 5th.
