Approaching 1,500 victories, Mike Turo of New York leads high school baseball active coaching wins leaders

With seven wins during the 2025 season, Monroe Campus (Bronx, N.Y.) coach Mike Turo will join Gene Schultz of Kee (Lansing, Iowa) as the only spring only high school baseball coaches with over 1,500 career wins.

Turo begins the 2025 season as the active wins leader with 1,493. His Eagles went 33-9 last year and will likely hit 30 wins again this year considering that Turo has averaged just over 31 wins a season since he began coaching at Monroe Campus in 1978.

Schultz retired in 2014 with 1,578 all-time spring wins, although Schultz's wins came during the summer months when Iowa holds its high school baseball season. Schultz has 1,754 wins total when fall and spring wins are combined. Turo ranks No. 8 on the all-time list, however all seven coaches above him accumulated wins during the fall and the spring. Billy Jack Bowen of Silo (Okla.), who retired in 2023, tops the all-time list with 2,252 wins.

John Lowery of Jefferson (Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.) is just 50 wins behind Turo. He begins the 2025 season with 1,443 wins in 54 seasons.

A total of 14 coaches begin the 2025 season with over 1,000 career wins with four of those coaches reaching the milestone last year. They include Jody Hamilton at Owensboro Catholic (Owensboro, Ky.), Donnie Hoffman at Ripley (Okla.), Stacy Hester at Manchester Academy (Yazoo City, Miss.) and Tommy Pharr of Christian Academy of Knoxville (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Two coaches with over 1,000 wins will not be back in 2025. William Booth of Hartselle (Ala.) passed away in May after a long battle with cancer. He is the all-time winningest coach in Alabama history with 1,217 wins (1,217-520).

Meanwhile, Bobby Howard, a longtime Columbus (Ga.) coach was let go from his position at Mosley (Lynn Haven, Fla.) last year and is an assistant coach at Brookstone (Columbus, Ga.). He has a record of 1,069-359.
