The Brenham Cubs will head out on the road to take on the Gilmer Buckeyes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Brenham has four straight wins, Gilmer has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
While Brenham's victory against Killeen wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Cubs sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 15-13 win over the Kangaroos on Friday. Given the Cubs' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 103rd, while the Kangaroos are ranked 429th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Brenham's receiving core played a big role in the win, headlined by Cartelle Brown and Chris Guidry. Brown picked up 64 receiving yards and one touchdown while Guidry picked up 33 receiving yards and one score.

Brenham's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB five times. The heavy lifting was done by Brooks Roznovsky and Doyle Brown, who racked up four sacks between them. Roznovsky also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with ten.
Meanwhile, Gilmer came up short against Lindale on Friday and fell 35-23.
Brenham will need to focus on slowing down Zade Taylor, one of several Gilmer players who made an impact when they last played. He threw for 309 yards and three TDs while picking up 12.9 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 57 yards. Trace Haynes was Taylor's top target, picking up 124 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
Gilmer's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Brenham, their record now sits at 4-0.
Brenham ended up a good deal behind Gilmer in their previous meeting back in September of 2024, losing 51-37. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Taylor, who rushed for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also picked up 65 receiving yards and one TD. Now that the Cubs know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
