The Covenant Day Lions will venture away from home to face off against the James Island Trojans at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Covenant Day is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.
Covenant Day gave up the first runs on Monday, but they didn't let that get them down. They put the hurt on Wando with a sharp 8-2 win. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won six matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Alison Vandiver made a splash while hitting and pitching. She tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Covenant Day got a big performance out of Reilly Jane (RJ) Llaneza, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Charlotte Hall was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
Covenant Day kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, it may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but James Island ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They won by a run and slipped past Stratford 8-7.
Like Covenant Day, James Island also got a great game from a two-way player: Mary Davis Hancock. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over ten innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off 14 hits (and only one walk). Hancock was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Rachel Manchester was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her five plate appearances. Amelia Renault also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Covenant Day pushed their record up to 6-1-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for James Island, the win got them back to even at 2-2.
James Island's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Covenant Day has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.6 hits per game. It's a different story for James Island, though, as they've been averaging 10 hits. Given Covenant Day's sizable advantage in that area, James Island will need to find a way to close that gap.
