While the senior linebacker had no way of knowing prior to his team's Open Division Bowl Game matchup with Centennial (Corona) that the longtime Spartan mentor was going to step down as head coach later the next month, he nonetheless led the Spartans with 10 tackles in
the 48-28 victory.
For the season, Hutchings had 113 tackles and helped the Spartans go undefeated for the 27th time in Ladouceur's career. Hutchings also earned All-Area MVP honors from both the Contra Costa Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, indicating how important he was to De La Salle's success.
As a result, the USC-bound Hutchings has been chosen as the MaxPreps Division I Player of the Year.
Hutchings is joined on the honor roll by Granite Bay coach Ernie Cooper. His team started the season 1-3, but then won its final 12 games, including a
21-20 win over Long Beach Poly in the Division I state championship game. In leading his team to the school's first state championship, Cooper is the MaxPreps Division I Coach of the Year.
