The Doral Academy Firebirds will challenge the Westminster Christian Warriors at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Doral Academy will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line.
Doral Academy picked up another tournament win on Saturday. They blew past LaBelle 13-3. Fans of the Firebirds have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.
Camilia Diaz tossed a big game, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Sarah Breaux was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Zoey Abdullah, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.
Doral Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .381 or higher in six consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Westminster Christian unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Saturday. They and Somerset Academy finished up their game with a 6-6 tie.
Doral Academy's win was their 17th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. With that tie, Westminster Christian's record moves to 5-3-1.
Westminster Christian's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Doral Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Westminster Christian, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Doral Academy keep running through batters, or will Westminster Christian buck the trend?
Doral Academy took their victory against Westminster Christian when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 8-0. Will Doral Academy repeat their success, or does Westminster Christian have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
