Iona Prep (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has led the Gaels to a 2-1 record and they are currently the second-ranked team in the Big Apple according to the MaxPreps computer rankings. The lone loss came against the top-ranked team in New Jersey,
Bergen Catholic (Oradell).

After a season-opening 38-7 loss against the Crusaders, Iona Prep has outscored its last two opponents 62-21. In a 31-7 win over Chaminade (Mineola) he completed 19 of 26 passes for 221 yards and a score. He added 10 carries for 51 yards. Last week, in a 31-14 victory against Springfield (Central, Mass.) he completed 21 of 28 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Gaston has thrown for 482 yards and three touchdowns through the Gaels first three games. He has completed 71.2 percent of his passes to go with 111 yards rushing and another score.
The 5-foot-8, 160-pound junior quarterback spent his first two seasons at
St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, N.J.). As a sophomore he accounted for 1,876 yards of total offense (1,272 passing, 604 rushing) and 18 touchdowns.
Iona Prep plays at
St. Anthony's (Melville) in the biggest game in New York on Friday. The two teams met in last year's CHSFL AAA championship and the Friars won 50-18. St. Anthony's is fresh off a win over Gaston's former school, handing St. Joseph Regional its first loss of the season.
