Softball Recap: Harlingen South Sets Scoring Season-High Against Donna

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Harlingen South). Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Donna Redskins a 19-0 shutout on Friday. The Hawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 contests by six runs or more this season.

Kailee Silva made a big impact no matter where she played. She tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jaylin Mata, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Kara Jensen was another key player, scoring four runs while going 4-for-4.

Harlingen South was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .692. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Harlingen South is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Donna, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 13 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-18-1 record this season.

Harlingen South will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Porter at 6:30 p.m. The Cowboys' pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so the Hawks' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Donna, they will head out on the road to take on Edcouch-Elsa at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Redskins are facing the Yellowjackets at the right time seeing as the Yellowjackets are stuck on a four-game losing streak.
