It was a good run, but the Cape Hatteras Hurricanes unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of Camden County by a score of 34-31. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Cape Hatteras came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 157th, while Camden County is ranked 455th).
Cape Hatteras' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kylie Philips, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds. Those nine rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. Elizabeth Fairbanks was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Camden County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Aaliyah Anderson out in front who scored five points along with 15 rebounds. Anderson is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Amaya Demps, who scored four points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Cape Hatteras' loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Camden County, their victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 1-3.
Cape Hatteras will head out on the road to face off against Pungo Christian Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Camden County will be home for the holidays to greet Pasquotank County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Pasquotank County is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
