Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up seven more assists than your opponent, a fact the Kennedy Cougars proved on Friday. They came out on top against McClatchy by a score of 57-48. Given Kennedy's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 257th, while McClatchy is ranked 782nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Kennedy was led to victory by Jordan Lawrence and Aharon Young. Lawrence scored 14 points along with seven rebounds, while Young scored 16 points along with five rebounds and two blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Lawrence has scored all season. Eric Lopez was another key contributor, scoring six points along with seven assists.
When it comes to explaining why McClatchy lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kendall Andrews. Despite the final result, he scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Andrews also posted two+ blocks for the first time this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Eugene Castillo, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
The win makes it two in a row for Kennedy and bumps their season record up to 13-7. As for McClatchy, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-14.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Kennedy will take on Grant at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for McClatchy, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Laguna Creek at 7:30 p.m.
