The El Campo Ricebirds will take on the St. Joseph Flyers in a tournament on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
El Campo had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the seven-run drubbing they dealt Victoria West on Friday. El Campo blew past Victoria West 13-6. The victory was nothing new for the Ricebirds as they're now sitting on seven straight.
Presley Bacak made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Rylan Staff was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. Grace Cerny also deserves some recognition as she hit her first hit of the season.
El Campo kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now hit at least ten hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, while St. Joseph put up some runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Bay City. Everything went St. Joseph's way against Bay City as St. Joseph made off with a 10-0 win. The victory was just business as usual for the Flyers, who after eight games remain undefeated this season.
Ava Martinez was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Valery Villareal, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.
El Campo's record is now 7-1-1. As for St. Joseph, their record is now 8-0.
Saturday's matchup will be a test for both team's pitchers. El Campo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having hit 0 of their hits per game. However, it's not like St. Joseph struggles in that department as they've hit 0 of their hits this season. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
El Campo suffered a grim 11-5 defeat to St. Joseph in their previous matchup back in February of 2017. Can El Campo avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
