Football Recap: Six Straight Home Victories for Wood River

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Boone Central, Wood River was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They took down the St. Cecilia Bluehawks 26-7. That's more bragging rights for the Eagles, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

It was another big night for Madden Brabec, who rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries, and also threw for 87 yards and one TD. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making nine total tackles and defending two passes in addition to snagging an interception.

Wood River didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited St. Cecilia to a completion percentage of just 38.9%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Brabec and Jace Martin, who each logged two passes deflected. Wood River wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 50%.

Wood River didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Brabec, Sawyer Thomposn, and Martin picked up one apiece.

When it comes to explaining why St. Cecilia lost, don't look at Grady Zeckser. Despite the final result, he rushed for 67 yards and one score on only nine carries.

Those home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 14.0 points on average over those games. As for St. Cecilia, their loss dropped their record down to 0-5.

Wood River didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 25-20 victory against Fillmore Central on the 3rd. As for St. Cecilia, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 55-0 win against Gibbon on the 3rd.
