After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Bloomfield, the Shiprock Chieftains were happy to have found some success on Wednesday. They pulled ahead with a 42-41 photo finish over Newcomb. That's another feather in the cap for Shiprock, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Shiprock to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shaisheia Begay, who scored 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayleigh Bigman, who scored nine points.
Newcomb lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Neveah Miller, who scored 11 points along with four steals. Another player making a difference was Jazlyn Begay, who scored seven points along with three steals.
Shiprock pushed their record up to 3-2 with that win, which was their third straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.3 points per game. As for Newcomb, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.
Shiprock will be playing in front of their home fans against Piedra Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Piedra Vista focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Thursday. As for Newcomb, they will head out on the road to face off against Aztec at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
