Softball Recap: Thursday's Win Is Sabino's Tenth in Last 12 Outings

Sabino had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 12-run drubbing they dealt Thatcher on Thursday. The Sabercats blew past the Eagles 12-0. The Sabercats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten games by six runs or more this season.

Avery Nielson and Anouk Alzaga made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Nielson struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Alzaga didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave her a new career-high. At the plate, Nielson got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and four RBI, while Alzaga went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Bobbi Valles, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Aguirre, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Sabino always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Sabino has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Thatcher, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-13 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sabino will welcome Pusch Ridge Christian Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Sabercats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season.
