The Brandeis Broncos are taking a road trip to square off against the Clark Cougars at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Brandeis is coming into the game hot, having won their last five games.
On Saturday, Brandeis beat Churchill 6-1. That's two games straight that the Broncos have won by exactly five runs.
Tj Byrd spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Grayson Hallmark was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Tanner Hallmark, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Clark ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Madison, sneaking past 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Cougars have posted against the Mavericks since April 27, 2021.
Angel Tamayo and Jake Ramirez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Tamayo pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Ramirez struck out six batters over eight innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Clark is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 6-7 otherwise. At bat, Tamayo scored a run while going 2-for-4, while Ramirez scored a run while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Derek Rodriguez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Brandeis' win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-4-1. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Clark, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season.
Brandeis couldn't quite get it done against Clark in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 9-4. Can Brandeis avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
