After a string of three wins, the Broadwater Academy Vikings's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They were outmatched by Hampton Christian Academy at home and fell 50-22. While losing is never fun, Broadwater Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 61st, while Hampton Christian Academy is ranked 14th).
Broadwater Academy's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Leah Smith, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Tatum Watson who scored 3 points along with 6 rebounds. Smith scored a full 50% of Broadwater Academy's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Broadwater Academy struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Hampton Christian Academy racked up 12.
Hampton Christian Academy's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mikaela Lee, who scored 17 points along with 7 steals and 6 rebounds. The game was Lee's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Mahdy Sigler, who scored 10 points along with 8 rebounds.
Broadwater Academy's loss dropped their record down to 3-1. As for Hampton Christian Academy, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-0.
Coincidentally, the pair will both be playing Portsmouth Christian the next time they take the court. Broadwater Academy will head out to face Portsmouth Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Hampton Christian Academy will host them at 5:30 p.m. on January 5, 2024.
