Four-star junior Tylan Keys nears Mississippi state record with 506 yards rushing in 60-54 Poplarville victory

Two-sport standout finds end zone eight times as Hornets improve to 2-1.

Poplarville (Miss.) junior running back Tylan Keys came close to breaking the Mississippi single-game rushing mark on Friday when he ran for 506 yards and eight touchdowns as the Hornets beat Hancock (Kiln, Miss.) 60-54.

It was initially reported that he'd run for 546 yards, which would have set the mark, but stats posted to MaxPreps and confirmed by the coach had his total at 506 yards. Gulf Coast High School Football tweeted on X that Keys had tallied 546 yards in the victory.

The four-star junior had 17 carries and came up 37 yards short of the 543 yard mark set by Jaley Adams of Kossuth in 2015, according to the MaxPreps National High School Football Record Book.

Keys is uncommitted but has 16 offers including Boston College, Colorado and Mississippi State among others. He has rushed for 823 yards if his 546 yards stands up as his total on Friday.

As a freshman, he ran for 1,222 yards but those totals tailed off last season as he finished with 565 yards, just nine more than he reportedly gained on Friday for 2-1 Poplarville.

In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Keys is a standout baseball player for the Hornets. He hit .347 with 17 RBI and two home runs as a sophomore. He had 33 hits and 25 stolen bases as a freshman and earned All-South Mississippi selection by the Sun Herald.
