Former two-time MaxPreps National Champion
Sumrall (Miss.) is in line for another title if it can hold on to its No. 1 spot in the Small Town Top 25 high school baseball rankings.
The Bobcats were the MaxPreps National Champions in 2009 with a record of 36-0. They repeated in 2010 with a record of 36-1.
This year, Sumrall is 30-4 and has reached the Region 4 semifinal game against Purvis, which is ranked No. 2 in the small town rankings. A series win over Purvis would put Sumrall in the finals against either Ripley (ranked No. 15) or South Pontotoc (Pontotoc).
Teams from the Southern part of the United States dominate the rankings at the this point in the season because the computer algorithm gives extra weight to playoff games. Mississippi teams have reached the semifinals and occupy eight of the top 15 spots in the rankings.
Teams qualify for the Small Town Top 25 based on an enrollment of under 1,000 in a town with a population under 10,000. Teams are ranked based on their MaxPreps computer rating.
