Apollo has enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will challenge the Edmonson County Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Apollo focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 on Friday.
Apollo struggled with assists on Friday (Daviess County had 16 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Apollo was the victim of a rough 49-27 defeat at the hands of Daviess County. While losing is never fun, Apollo can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 189th, while Daviess County is ranked 33rd).
Apollo's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Jenna Dant, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Mattingly Taylor who scored four points along with five rebounds. That was a full 51.9% of Apollo's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Jennifer Lee, who's played more minutes than anyone else on the Eagles squad sat out for Friday's contest. With Lee sidelined, Apollo had to make some big changes to the lineup. Three players got more time on the court than they're used to: Taylor (12), Maleah Mcbride (26), and Avery Edge (27). The trio had averaged 4.11, 11.14, and 13.36 minutes respectively before Friday's match. Taylor made the most of the opportunity, scoring four points along with five rebounds. A few more games like that and she might be seeing even more time going forward.
Apollo struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They are winless (0-3) when they just don't pass the ball.
Meanwhile, Edmonson County came up short against Russell County on Saturday and fell 60-48.
Apollo has traveled a rocky road recently having lost 14 of their last 17 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-18 record this season. As for Edmonson County, their loss dropped their record down to 17-7.
Apollo lost to Edmonson County on the road by a decisive 53-39 margin in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. Can Apollo avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
