The Fort Myers Green Wave will look to defend their home field on Thursday against the Cape Coral Seahawks at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Fort Myers has five straight victories, Cape Coral has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Fort Myers stacked a fourth blowout onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They breezed by Cypress Lake on the road to the tune of 38-0. Given Fort Myers' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 130th, while Cypress Lake is ranked 412th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Chris Mcfoley continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns on only ten passes, while also punching in a touchdown on the ground. Madrid Tucker was another key contributor, gaining 79 total yards and two touchdowns.
Another reason for the win was Fort Myers' imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for eight sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Jordan Simon and Khalil Thomas who racked up five sacks between them.
Meanwhile, Cape Coral pushed their score all the way to 34 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a hard 50-34 fall against Mariner.
Despite their loss, Cape Coral saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Dereon Thomas, who rushed for 101 yards, was perhaps the best of all. Thomas really tore up the turf during one magnificent 96-yard run. Another player making a difference was Ivan Harvin, who threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes.
Fort Myers' victory bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Cape Coral, their loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their overall record down to 4-5.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's matchup: Fort Myers commands a daunting offense this season, having averaged 4.9 touchdowns per game.
