High school baseball: Mike Turo of New York takes over as nation's active coaching wins leader

Turo, now in his 47th year at Monroe Campus, takes over the top spot on the active wins list with 1,460. His Eagles went 32-9 last year and won a PSAL championship in 2022. He is also second behind Gene Schultz of Kee (Lansing, Iowa) for most spring only wins. Schultz had 1,578 wins in the spring but 1,754 over his entire career. Turo is one of 13 active coaches with over 1,000 career wins. Ronald Vincent of J.H. Rose (Greenville, N.C.) joined the millennium club last year and has 1,011 career wins.

There are also two newcomers to the active list. Jerry Boatner retired from West Lauderdale (Collinsville, Miss.) in 2018, but returned last year as the head coach at Clarke Central (Athens, Ga.) at the age of 78. Meanwhile, Buster Kelso, who won over 1,000 games while coaching at Christian Brothers (Memphis, Tenn.) before leaving in 2021, has landed at Lausanne Collegiate (Memphis, Tenn.), where he is the co-head coach.

The active wins leader list includes 171 coaches with at least 600 career wins. In the case of Oklahoma, which also plays a fall schedule, win totals are a combination of the fall and spring seasons. Complete records are listed when available. Only win totals are listed if losses have not been determined.

MaxPreps has also compiled a list of all-time coaching wins leaders. The list is now posted on the MaxPreps National High School Baseball Record Book and contains names and records for over 500 coaches who have over 600 wins in their career.
