Home to some of the greatest players in WNBA history,
Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) won its second straight New York City championship this year to give it the all-time lead on the list of high school girls basketball programs with the most state championships at 32.
Christ the King produced Sue Bird, Tina Charles and Chamique Holdsclaw, a trio that combined for 27 WNBA All-Star selections. The Royals were particularly powerful from 1985 to 2007 when they won 23 straight city championships.
RECORD BOOK: Most state championships
New York has four governing bodies for high school sports (PSAL, NYSAIS, CHSAA and NYSPHSAA) that all conduct their own "state" championships. The New York State Federation held state championships at one point, but has paused doing so since 2023.

The Catholic High School Athletic Association, of which Christ the King is a member, holds championships among its four dioceses to determine a city champion, which is considered, for the purposes of the MaxPreps National High School Record Book, a state championship.
The Royals were tied with
Bishop Lynch (Dallas, Texas), which plays in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, at 30 state championships apiece heading into the 2023-24 season. Both won championships last year to up their totals to 31, but Bishop Lynch did not win a championship in 2024-25.
Christ the King defeated
Monsignor Scanlan (Bronx) in March to capture its 32nd state championship and move into sole ownership of the top spot on the list.
The Royals top the list of teams with five or more state championships that includes over 600 schools that have accomplished the feat, including 94 with 10 or more championships.
The list includes schools from state associations as well as private school associations who are not members of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Nazareth closed to within five state titles of Texas leader Bishop Lynch with a state crown this year. The Swifts hold the UIL record with 26 championships.
Nazareth was tied for third place with
Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kan.), which had 25 state crowns. Other schools with 20 or more titles include
Leake Academy (Madden, Miss.) with 22,
Kirtland Central (Kirtland, N.M.) with 21 and
Canyon (Texas) with 20.
