The Akron-Fairgrove Vikings will venture away from home to face off against the Mayville Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Akron-Fairgrove is looking for their season's first win.
More Academy hit Akron-Fairgrove with a four-run fifth inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Vikings fell 8-4 to the Crusaders.
Akron-Fairgrove saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kent Bernia, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mayville). They never let Kingston get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory on Thursday. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Cardinals recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Landon Topham was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Luka Campbell, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Mayville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.
Mayville's victory was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Akron-Fairgrove, their loss dropped their record down to 0-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Akron-Fairgrove has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mayville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Akron-Fairgrove suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Mayville when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Vikings avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
