Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Takes a Loss

Cardinal Newman was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They had to suffer through a 79-47 loss at the hands of the Northside Christian Academy Crusaders. The Cardinals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Crusaders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2018.

Despite the defeat, Cardinal Newman saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Luis Echevarria went 11 for 22 on his way to 26 points along with five boards and three steals. Echevarria's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Nathan Macmurdo, who posted six points.

Northside Christian Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jaylen Weaver, who went 5 of 9 en route to 13 points in addition to six rebounds and five steals. Cade McNeill was another key player, going 7 for 8 on his way to 16 points.

Cardinal Newman's loss dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Northside Christian Academy, their victory was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 12-6.

Cardinal Newman wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 67-33 defeat against Heathwood Hall Episcopal on the 31st. As for Northside Christian Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 73-71 win against Ben Lippen on the 31st.
