Bellarmine College Prep and St. Ignatius College Preparatory are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2022, but likely not for long. The Bells will take on the Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Bellarmine College Prep's pitching crew has only allowed three runs per game this season, so St. Ignatius College Preparatory's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
On Saturday, Bellarmine College Prep didn't have quite enough to beat Los Altos and fell 4-3. The Bells have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Bellarmine College Prep got a good showing from Christian Duarte, who pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.
At the plate, Bellarmine College Prep saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sam Mendoza, who went 1-for-3 with one run. Hudson Reid also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Ignatius College Preparatory). They blew past Aragon 12-1 on Saturday. The Wildcats not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since March 28th (when they won 11-0).
Spencer Guido looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jack Callen was a standout: he went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since April 1st. Another player making a difference was AJ Wineinger, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
St. Ignatius College Preparatory always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .556. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Aragon only posted an OBP of .238.
The victory made it two in a row for St. Ignatius College Preparatory and bumps their season record up to 12-7-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 1 runs in those games. As for Bellarmine College Prep, their loss dropped their record down to 11-10.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Bellarmine College Prep has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Ignatius College Preparatory struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Bellarmine College Prep skirted past St. Ignatius College Preparatory 2-0 in their previous meeting on April 11th. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bells since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
