Newcomb has been on the road for five straight, but on Thursday they'll finally head home. They will be home for the holidays to greet the Bloomfield Bobcats at 7:00 p.m.
Last Saturday, Newcomb came up short against Texico and fell 48-39. Newcomb has not had much luck with Texico recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Newcomb's defeat came about despite a quality game from Michaela Roanhorse, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds. Those 12 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Nevaeh Miller, who scored eight points along with three steals.
Even though they lost, Newcomb were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Bloomfield put another one in the bag on Monday to keep their perfect season alive. They enjoyed a cozy 44-26 victory over Pojoaque Valley. Winning is a bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 13 to 3 on the offensive boards, as Bloomfield did.
Bloomfield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Danielle Johnson led the charge by scoring nine points along with 11 rebounds and five blocks. That's the first time this season that Johnson posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Aliya Quintana, who scored 14 points along with nine rebounds.
Newcomb's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Bloomfield, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-0.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's game: Newcomb have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 4.2 threes per game. It's a different story for Bloomfield, though, as they've been averaging only 2.2 threes per game. Given Newcomb's sizeable advantage in that area, Bloomfield will need to find a way to close that gap.
Newcomb was taken down by Bloomfield 55-27 in their previous meeting back in December of 2022. Can Newcomb avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
