Washington (Miami) captured the Class 4A state championship in Florida and finished the year at the top of the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.
Leading the way on that team was the quarterback,
Treon Harris, who has been chosen as the MaxPreps Medium Schools Player of the Year.
Harris heads the annual Medium Schools All-American Team, as chosen by MaxPreps. He is one of three Washington players on the teams, as he is joined by defensive lineman Chad Thomas and defensive back Nigel Bethel.
Harris did not post huge numbers: He threw for just 2,113 yards on the season. But he came through in the big games when Washington needed him most. He threw for 287 yards and five touchdowns in a key season-opening blowout win over eventual Georgia state champion Norcross. Against Central (Miami), he threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score.
During the playoffs, Harris had his best games of the season. He threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more in a win over highly regarded University in the quarterfinals. He followed that effort with a five-touchdown performance in a 49-10 blowout of Cocoa. In the final against Bolles, threw two touchdown passes and ran for another.
Besides earning all-state honors in Florida, Harris was also selected by the Florida Dairy Farmers Association as the Class 4A State Player of the Year.
Kevin Wallace of
Bowling Green (Ky.) is the Medium Schools Coach of the Year. Also named the Kentucky State Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, Wallace led the Purples to their third-straight Kentucky Class 5A state championship, beating Pulaski County 49-14 in the finals.
Besides winning three straight championships, Wallace has Bowling Green on a 44-game win streak - the third longest in state history. During his tenure at Bowling Green, Wallace has a spectacular win-loss record of 204-35, according to the AP. His overall record is 249-96.
The MaxPreps Medium Schools All-American Teams are comprised of 60 players who play on teams that play in state enrollment divisions that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
