Top-ranked Sierra Canyon, the two-time defending CIF State Open Division champion, won a couple of tough Southern Section Open pool games last week.
Now the Trailblazers get Mater Dei, ranked No. 3 in the MaxPreps California boys basketball rankings.
While Sierra Canyon has ruled the roost lately, Mater Dei is the undisputed top team in California over the years, with 11 state crowns, all under the state's winningest coach Gary McKnight.
Last week, Sierra Canyon defeated St. Anthony (Long Beach) 61-49 and Etiwanda 73-62 to win Pool A. Mater Dei won Pool B with wins over previously nationally-ranked Rancho Christian (76-71) and Harvard-Westlake (65-46).
Sierra Canyon and Mater Dei face off 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Long Beach Pyramid for the section title and the winner will no doubt be the top seed in the CIF Southern California regional playoffs.
In Northern California, No. 4 Sheldon (Sacramento) continues to roll, winning Sac-Joaquin Section playoff games by 33 and 31 points. They should win the section easily and be the top-seeded team heading into the CIF Northern California Open Division Tournament.
Bay Area squads Archbishop Mitty, Bellarmine, Salesian, Dublin and Bishop O'Dowd could all threaten Sheldon's three-year run as being Northern California's top squad.
