It was a record-setting day for the United States U17 National Team at the FIBA World Cup in Istanbul, Turkiye. In a 146-62 win over China, the Americans broke single-game records for points, assists and steals early Tuesday morning.
The United States broke the previous scoring record of 138 points set by Spain against United Arab Emirates in 2014. It was the ninth time that the U17 National Team has scored 120 points or more in the history of the event and the second time in the 2024 World Cup.
The USA also broke its own record for most assists with 43. The previous record of 40 was set earlier in the week against Guinea in a 124-49 victory. The USA U17 group has posted each of the top five assists totals in event history, racking up 36 in a game against Egypt in 2010 and 32 in a contest against Mali in 2022 and vs. China in 2010.
In addition, the 33 steals from the USA U17 National Team broke its own record of 29 set in 2018 against China, which committed 38 turnovers Tuesday and shot just 22 of 70 (31.4 percent) from the field.
