MaxPreps Top 10 Texas High School Football Games of the Week

In its ongoing 33-game winning streak, Highland Park (Dallas) has been held to less than 27 points in a game only once. The opponent that limited Highland Park to 10 points — one touchdown, an extra point and one field goal — was Frisco Lone Star on Sept. 13, 2018.

A year to the day later, the teams meet again Friday, this time at Highlander Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in the headliner of the Week 3 MaxPreps Top 10 Texas High School Football Games of the Week.

Highland Park (2-0), Class 5A-D1 state champion the last three seasons, is averaging 59 points per game. The defense of Lone Star (2-0) is allowing 1.5 points per game and has yet to give up a touchdown.

Both teams were 2-0 when they met last season in Frisco. Highland Park took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter and Lone Star responded for a halftime 7-all deadlock.

It stayed that way until Hudson Clark's 22-yard field goal in the final seconds pushed Highland Park over the finish line, 10-7.

Lone Star: WR Marvin Mims (6-0, 180), LB Jaylan Ford (6-3, 210), QB Garret Rangel (6-2, 165), RB Jaden Nixon (5-9, 156), WR Trace Bruckler (6-3, 190).

Highland Park: QB Chandler Morris (6-0, 178), DL Prince Dorbah (6-4, 230), RB Will Anderson (5-9 180), WR Ben Smith (5-8, 150),WR Case Savage (5-10, 170).

Highland Park is shooting for its fourth consecutive state title, but Lone Star will not be intimidated after last year's close call. When the teams met in Frisco, Lone Star gave Highland Park its closest game of the season, falling 10-7.

St. John's (Washington, D.C.) at Duncanville (Texas) (1)

St, John's: QB Sol-Jay Maiava (6-3, 180), WR Rakim Jarrett (6-0, 200), RB Colby McDonald (6-0, 215). DL Mekhail Sherman (6-3, 225).

Duncanville: QB Ja'quinden Jackson (6-2, 215), DB Chris Thompson Jr. (6-2, 190), WR Zeriah Beason (6-1, 185), DL James Mitchell (6-2, 270), RB Trysten Smith (5-10, 205).

The state's top-ranked team gets a chance to host a national power. Duncanville, one play away from winning the Class 6A-D1 state title a year ago, is 2-0 after wins over Class 5A foes, Lancaster and South Oak Cliff (Dallas). The game lost a little luster when St. John's (2-1) was beaten 34-30 on Friday by St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia).

Westfield: WR Malachai Jones (6-0, 180), QB Cardell Williams (6-2, 160), RB Kendal Taylor (5-9, 172), WR Jalen Francis (6-2, 170), LB Dyllon Peavy (5-10, 210).

North Shore: LB Corey Flagg Jr. (6-0, 215), DB Upton Stout (5-10, 175), WR Shadrach Banks (6-1, 210), RB Zachary Evans (6-0, 200), OL Damieon George (6-7, 325).

As expected, North Shore took out some of its frustration from a Week 1 loss to Katy with a resounding 38-7 win over Ridge Point (Missouri City). Westfield (2-0), which always seems to be a tough out in the state playoffs, would like to make amends for a 35-3 loss to North Shore last season.

Bowie: QB Drevonn Ponder (6-0, 203), RB Marsaillus Sims (5-10, 215), WR Jimmy Valsin (6-1, 160), FS Kameron Sanders (5-6, 160), LB Trelyn Martin (5-8, 180).

Rockwall: QB Braedyn Locke (6-1, 180), RB Zach Henry (5-11, 195), WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba (6-1, 195), FS Tyler Ashworth (5-9, 170), LB Jake Edwards (5-11, 200).

Sophomore quarterback Locke has thrown 10 touchdown passes for 1-1 Rockwall and is averaging 475.5 passing yards per game. He's aided by the presence of Smith-Njigba with five touchdown receptions and a 200-yard per game average. Bowie has been potent on offense as well despite an influx of younger players lacking much varsity playing time before this season including junior quarterback Ponder.

Abilene: LB Jorge Hernandez (5-6, 142), RB Phonzo Dotson (5-10, 195), G Christopher Loya (6-0, 271), QB Eric Abbe, LB Xavier Graves.

Cooper: QB Aidan Thompson (6-4, 180), RB Noah Garcia (5-8, 160), LB Aeneas Favors (5-11, 190), CB Dylon Davis (5-10, 165), SB Daelin Campos (5-5, 130).

This is the 59th edition of the "Crosstown Showdown." The series dates to 1961 with the opening of Cooper. Despite winning 12 of the last 15, Abilene trails Cooper 32-23 with one tie. Cooper, which competes in Class 5A-D1, enters with a 2-0 record while Class 6A Abilene is 0-2.

DeSoto: QB Samari Collier (6-3, 210), CB Jaheem Muhammad (5-10, 170), DT Byron Murphy II (6-2, 256), LB D'verryon Foster (5-11, 190), WR Lawrence Arnold (6-4, 175).

Bishop Dunne: QB Simeon Evans (6-0, 180), WR Kofi Thompson (5-9, 160), DB Alex Orji (6-2, 215), LB Brennon Scott (6-2, 235), WR/DB Nicholas Johnson (5-11, 175).

Bishop Dunne, the TAPPS Division I state champion, is off to a 2-0 start. DeSoto is 2-0 as well in a return season for head coach Claude Mathis. When the teams met in Week 3 of 2018, DeSoto was a 19-7 winner.

West-Orange Stark: T Quincy Ledet Jr. (6-3, 270), DT Shemar Manaway (6-3, 230), MLB/TE Tyrone Brown (5-11, 205), G Jordan Garrett (5-11, 305).

Newton: QB Nate Williams (5-10, 160), RB DeAnthony Gatson (5-10, 198), RB Kevin Watson (5-11, 185), DE Dreshawn Spikes (6-1, 182), WR/SS Dominique Seastrunk (5-11, 180).

A string of four consecutive state title appearances was interrupted last season, but the Mustangs have started strong with wins over 5A-D2 Nederland and 4A-D1 Little Cypress-Mauriceville (Orange). Newton is coming off back-to-back state title seasons in Class 3A-D2.

Jay: WR Marcus Alcaraz (6-0, 190), QB Danny Amezquita (5-9, 170), CB Sanford Jones (5-10, 175), FS Justyce Sheridan (5-11, 180), DL Luis Cardona (5-10, 235).

Brennan: QB Jordan Flores (6-1, 190), RB Darryon Tolefree (5-8, 165), OL Shaquan Flagg (6-3, 260), DT Ryan Curtis (6-2, 255), SS Donovan Dreighton (6-1, 175).

Both won District 28-6A openers last week and are 2-0 on the season. Jay has settled on senior Amezquita as its quarterback to compliment a talented receiver group. Brennan is getting excellent defensive play so far, allowing only 14 points in the first two games.

Canutillo: RB Carlos Amato (5-6, 155), RB Christian Velasquez (5-10, 180), QB Caleb Rodriguez (6-2, 180), LB Sebastian Garcia (6-0, 180) LB Esteban Tavera (5-11, 180).

Mountain View: CB Brandon Ramirez (5-7, 162), QB Chris Gamboa (5-9, 165), LB Alexis Cordero (5-9, 170), RB Hector Nevarez (5-10, 168), DT/TE Esteban Pena (6-2, 268).

The two sides have taken different routes for 2-0 starts. Class 5A-D2 Canutillo defeated a couple neighboring 5A-D1 foes, Eastlake (El Paso) and Bel Air (El Paso). Mountain View, which competes in 4A-D2, fattened up on a couple of New Mexico opponents.

Floydada: RB/DB Marcus Perez (5-8, 145), RB/LB Mike DeLaFuente (5-11, 190), QB Trace Glasscock (5-11, 155), OL/DL Daniel Garza (5-11, 280), RB/DL Jose Lira (5-7, 170).

Lockney: RB/DB Anson Rendon (5-10, 150), RB/LB Noel Ceniceros (6-1, 210), OL/DL Miguel Lara (5-11, 250), OL/DL Andrew Sanchez (5-11, 245), QB/DB Pablo Merales (5-9, 145).
