DeSoto and Katy, the top two teams in this week's MaxPreps Texas Top 25, will not have a head-to-head opportunity to prove which team is best.
The two 9-0 powerhouses, DeSoto from the Dallas area and Katy from Greater Houston, are headed for different divisions of the Class 5A state playoffs that begin next week.
Under Texas rules, the top four finishers in each of the 32 Class 5A districts qualify for the playoffs. The two schools with the largest enrollment play in the Division I bracket and the two smallest in Division II. Each bracket is composed of 64 teams.
DeSoto, with an enrollment of 2,833, is the largest among playoff qualifiers in District 7-5A and thus is headed to Division I.
Katy (2,810) ranks No. 3 among District 19-5A playoff qualifiers in enrollment and will play in Division II.
Six other Texas top 10 teams appear to be headed for a loaded Division I: Coppell, Allen, Carroll (Southlake), Bowie (Arlington), Westfield (Houston) and Skyline (Dallas).
That leaves Steele (Cibolo) and Abilene joining Katy among top 10 teams in Division II.
Debuting in this week's Texas Top 25 are La Porte at No. 15 and Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City) at No. 25. La Porte is coming off a solid victory over previously-unbeaten Galena Park North Shore (Houston) in the ultra-competitive District 21-5A. Marshall recorded its second straight shutout and is making shambles of District 22-4A.
Here's the MaxPreps Texas Top 25 going into Week 10.
