Olivia Baker from Long (Skipperville, Ala.) set the national high school career home run record in 2019 with 87, a mark that would seem to be difficult to break. But the way Maci Bergeron is going, there could be a new national softball home run queen in 2022.
Baker, who plays at Troy University, broke the mark of 84 set by Jenna Ergle of Sumiton Christian in 2017, after hitting a national record 37 home runs as a senior in 2019. Bergeron, a junior at Notre Dame (Crowley, La.) began the season with 37 career home runs. She has added 16 during the 2021 season.
That total puts Bergeron 35 home runs from passing Baker, but the Louisiana slugger is hitting them out at an incredible rate. After her sophomore season, Bergeron had 37 home runs in 46 games. She has since added 16 home runs in 14 games giving her one every 1.17 games. By comparison, Baker had a home run every 1.59 games. Kasey Flores of Eastlake (El Paso, Texas), who set the four-year home run record of 75 in 2018 (broken by Baker the following season), averaged a home run every 1.84 games.
MaxPreps has tried to track down all high school softball home run hitters who have hit at least 53 career home runs, which is where Bergeron stands right now. Sources include the NFHS record book, state association record books and the MaxPreps leaderboards. Send any corrections or additions to Kevin Askeland at kevinaskeland65@gmail.com
