Chances are one of the 32 players taken today in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft will have played high school football in Florida. After all, of the 319 players taken in the first round over the past 10 years, 44 played in the Sunshine State.
And while the debate may rage as to what state rules in terms of which has the best brand of football, one thing is undeniable: Florida gets players to the NFL. In eight of the past 10 years, the state has had at least four first-round selections including 2018 when eight picks were Sunshine State alumni. That 2018 class includes Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Kelvin Benjamin, Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Shazier, Calvin Pryor, Sammy Watkins, and Khalil Mack.
Other high school football hotbeds are no slouch as Texas has had 38 first-round picks over the past decade while Georgia (30), California (26), Alabama (18), Louisiana (15), Ohio (13), North Carolina (12) and Pennsylvania (11) are the other states with double-digit selections.
Alaska, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Vermont and West Virginia have not had a first round selection over the last decade.
Twenty-five high schools have had multiple players drafted in the first round since 2012 but St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Northwestern (Miami) are the only two that have had four players selected.
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), Fort Bend Elkins (Missouri City, Texas) and South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.) all have three.
