Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Pupualii Sepulona of
St. Louis (Honolulu) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Hawaii High School Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-foot-3 sophomore forward led the Crusaders to a 27-7 record and second consecutive Division I state championship.
Sepulona averaged 18.3 points per game on the season. In the championship game victory over Campbell, he scored 15 points and earned most outstanding player honors for the state tournament.
A contributor on last year's state championship team, Sepulona has scored 700 points in his first two seasons at St. Louis. Against national powerhouse Montverde Academy (Fla.) in December at the 'Iolani Classic, he piled up 27 points and hit three 3-pointers.
