The high school football season in Minnesota came to a close over the weekend.
Elk River was among the victors, beating
Mankato West (Mankato) 29-26 in the Class AAAAA state championship game. That victory helped propel the Elks to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.
Elk River (13-0) capped an undefeated season by rushing for more than 400 yards to end Mankato West’s 31-game winning streak. Up 29-26 with 8:37 remaining in the fourth, the Elks methodically ran off the rest of the clock to win their second state title in school history and first since 2016.
Coming in at No. 2 was Class AAAAAA state champion
Maple Grove, which finished undefeated (13-0) after a win over No. 5
Rosemount 27-10. The Crimson were led by Minnesota MaxPreps Player of the Year
Jacob Kilzer, who contributed three touchdowns.
The Class AAA championship was decided on the final play of the game when
New London-Spicer (New London) completed a 48-yard hook-and-lateral to defeat
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (Glyndon) 27-26.
