Bishop Miege (Overland Park, Kan.), Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines, Iowa) and Caledonia (Minn.) are among the defending state champions who are seeking to extend long active state title winning streaks. However, Soldotna (Alaska), the school with the current longest state championship winning streak in the nation, will not get that chance.
Soldotna has won eight straight Alaskan titles and was poised to win its ninth this year and move into a tie for fourth-place all-time on MaxPreps' list of consecutive football state championships. However, the Alaska Schools Activities Association decided to
cancel the state football playoffs this year due to COVID 19.
Dowling, meanwhile, can join Soldotna, and three other teams, with eight in a row. Dowling is in the quarterfinals of the Iowa Class 4A state playoffs.
Others to watch include Bishop Miege and Caledonia. Bishop Miege has six state titles and is in the second round of the Kansas Class 4A playoffs. A total of 14 schools have won at least seven state championships.
Caledonia, meanwhile, is looking to extend its state championship win streak to six, while also adding to its nation-best win streak of 70.
St. Louis (Honolulu) and Washington (Sioux Falls, S.D.) are tied for the most consecutive state championships, although neither streak was part of a full playoff system. St. Louis won most of its 14 in a row in the Prep Bowl, which pitted the top two teams in the state in a single bowl game in the 1980s and early 1990s. Washington was named as the state champion from 1951-64 by acclaim from newspapers in the state and the official state rankings, which began in 1956.
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) won 10 state titles in a row from 2009 to 2018, while Phoenix Union (Ariz.), a school which closed in 1982, was a mythical champion from 1920 to 1928.
While most of the consecutive state titles on MaxPreps' list were won in a playoff format, some of the championships are mythical titles and are noted. Championships won in New Jersey were section championships, since the state does not conduct a complete playoff system. Likewise, California did not hold state playoffs for nearly 80 years and has conducted "bowl games" for the past 15 years. Winning streaks for the bowl games are included on the list, but California "section" championships are not included.

Soldotna was denied a chance this season for a ninth straight Alaska state football crown when the state association canceled the playoffs due to COVID-19 concerns. Soldotna has won a state title for eight straight seasons.
