Beyond the Record Book: Single-season passing yardage

Will Grier of Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.) had a spectacular 2012 season. Throwing for 5,785 yards, Grier's single season total ranks third all-time in high school football history. However, Grier's totals aren't in the National Federation of High Schools Record Book.

Maty Mauk of Kenton (Ohio) is the nation's all-time leading leading passer, according to the NFHS Record Book, with 18,932 career yards. Oddly, however, his single-season high of 5,670 yards in 2010 is not in the record book. Neither is his second-best total of 5,413 yards.

Then there is Dylan Favre of St. Stanislaus (Bay St. Louis, Miss.), the nephew of former NFL great Brett Favre. He led the nation in passing in 2009 with 5,511 yards. Again, that total is not in the NFHS Record Book.

The reasons why these performances aren't included among those found in the NFHS Record Book are varied. In Grier's case, his team was not a member of the North Carolina state association of schools, thus his effort was not considered a state record, let alone a national record.

Mauk's career totals have obviously been reported, but for some reason there was no follow up to include the single season marks. Favre's omission is even less clear, considering he led the nation in passing. One thing that is clear is that the totals rank among the best ever produced by a high school quarterback.

The National Federation of High Schools Record Book is a wonderful resource for high school sports fans with numerous lists showcasing the very best of high school sports.

However, as the governing body of high school sports in the United States, the National Federation has certain procedures in place to ensure that the record book is legitimate. The process involves a certain amount of documentation which, unfortunately, not every coach takes the time to complete. Thus many player performances, which should be included in the record book, are omitted.

That's no fault of the National Federation. The responsibility of reporting statistical totals lies with the coach and the school. However, the lack of names and totals that should be included leaves the record book incomplete.

To that end, MaxPreps is attempting to fill in the gaps. Using the numerous resources available via the state associations as well as other web sites dedicated to compiling state records, MaxPreps is working to complete a list of all-time football performances.

We'll start with single season passing. While the National Federation record book has about 150 entries for single season passing, the following list has over 500. We've used the same parameters as the National Federation. The lowest total on the National Federation list is also the minimum total on the MaxPreps list.

Will the MaxPreps lists be complete? Probably not. Undoubtedly there are many other outstanding performances that have been left to the dustbin of history because they have never been reported to a newspaper or state association.
