FUTSUM ZEINASELLASSIE DOMINATES
North Central (Indianapolis) senior Futsum Zeinasellassie won his third Indiana state cross country championship with a course-record time of 14 minutes, 48.8 seconds, beating runner-up Mitch Hubner of LaPorte (Ind.) by 44 seconds. The Terre Haute, Ind., course record of 14:53 had been held by All-American Lukas Verzbicas.
* Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) broke a course record for the fifth time this fall when he won the Essex County Championship in 14:20. He broke his own record by 22.5 seconds.
* Senior Molly Seidel of University Lake (Hartland, Wis.) won her fourth Division 3 state cross country crown with a meet-record time of 13:39.59 over a 4,000-meter course.
* Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.) senior Amy Weissenbach has made a commitment to Stanford University, according to the Los Angeles Times. She is among the nation's premier distance runners and California's defending state champion in the 800-meter run.

* Huntington Prep (W. Va.), loaded with Division I basketball players, opened its season over the weekend with an 81-48 rout of Next Level Prep Academy (Oakvale, Ontario, Canada). Sophomore star Andrew Wiggins stood out with 25 points and nine rebounds.
* Eighth-grader Jessie Aney of Century (Rochester, Minn.) defeated Caroline Ward of Edina (Minn.), 6-2, 6-2, to win the Minnesota Class 2A state tennis championship. Mounds Park Academy (St. Paul, Minn.) senior Amber Washington defeated Sonia Das of St. Paul Academy (Minn.), 6-4, 7-5, for her second Class A state singles title. She also has shared in four doubles titles, giving her a state-record six overall championships.
* Milestone coaching victories: Susan Brewer of Bellville (Texas) notched No. 800 in volleyball, while Eileen Donahue of Watertown (Mass.) posted No. 500 in field hockey.
* Bridgette Caquatto, a senior at Central (Naperville, Ill.), won women's all-around (55.875 points) and uneven bars gold medals during the Pan American Games gymnastics competition in Guadalajara, Mexico. Caquatto, who is committed to the University of Florida, is only the seventh American woman to capture the Pan Am all-around gold medal. Brandie Jay of Rocky Mountain (Fort Collins, Colo.) won the gold medal in vaulting.
