On Friday night, Howell completed 41 of 55 passes for 565 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns during a 58-30 victory over Horton (Kan.). He threw only one interception. Sunrise Christian is a Class 1A school, while Horton is 3A.
Howell has now completed 205 of 295 for 2,471 yards and 24 touchdowns for the the 5-2 Buffaloes.
"It was pretty easy," Howell told MaxPreps. "The cornerbacks were playing 18 yards off of our receivers, so we threw slants and went under them (in the first half). In the second half we threw spot routes and went up the middle (with deeper throws)."
Howell was a quarterback in his younger days, but played wide receiver as a sophomore.
"I'm surprised at the numbers," he admitted. "But because we don't have a running game we throw more. Most of the yards come after the catch. A lot come on screens. I can throw 50 yards, but haven't had to push that limit yet this year."
Bo Westerfield, a 6-3, 165-pound senior, was the biggest beneficiary of Howell's passing on Friday night. He snared 18 passes for 242 yards.
Prestyn Atherton had 10 catches for 185 yards, while
Weston Brewster had eight for 123 yards.
