Nolan Arenado, nicknamed "Sharknado" for his ability to make whirling throws while charging hard from the third base, helped get the Colorado Rockies off to a slamming start with a two-run home run in his first at-bat as the Rockies took a 10-0 lead over Milwaukee on Opening Day.
Arenado had three hits in his first four at-bats with three runs and four RBIs as Colorado scored four in the first, two in the third and four more in the fourth.
A shortstop at
El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.), Arenado led his team to a Southern Section title as a junior when he hit .456 with 32 RBIs and 33 runs. He then came back with a better year as a senior, hitting .517 with five home runs, 14 doubles and a triple.
He committed to Arizona State but instead signed with the Rockies, who selected him with the 59th pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft.
After a fast track through the minors, he blasted his first major league home run against his hometown Los Angeles Dodgers. In his sixth game he blasted a grand slam and in his first two seasons in the majors, he was selected NL Gold Glove winner at third base.
So Arenado is used to making a fast impression, including his 2015 debut.
