Tobyn Tannehill, the brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, pulled out a 58-56 win for
Big Spring (Texas) over
Tivy (Kerrville, Texas) on Friday with a 40-yard Hail Mary pass at the buzzer.
On the last play of the game, Tannehill dropped back to pass from the Tivy 40-yard line, rolled right, avoided two pass rushers, rolled back left and heaved it nearly 50 years to the goal line where
Hunter Hill somehow pulled the ball from a host of players on both sides.
Players from both teams raised their hands thinking they had won, until the referees raised theirs, signaling a touchdown. A
replay shown here reveals that the ball looks like it hit the ground before a diving Hill pulled it into his chest.
Nevertheless, Tannehill had a huge day for Big Spring. Besides completing 18 of 29 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns, he also rushed 20 times for 241 yards. That's 521 yards by himself.
Big Spring held the early lead, but Tivy, the alma mater of former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, scored 35 points in the second quarter to grab a 35-31 halftime lead.
Big Spring, however, outscored Tivy 21-7 in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard pass from Tannehill to Hunter Hill, an 80-yard run by Tannehill and the Hail Mary pass.
Cade Dyal had 494 yards passing for Tivy, completing 31 of 43 passes for six touchdowns. Dyal also ran for a score.
Tannehill is the third brother to play for Big Spring. Ryan Tannehill guided the Steers in 2006 before heading to Texas A&M. He preceded Manziel as the starting quarterback for the Aggies. Tyler Tannehill threw for 3,085 yards for the Steers in 2010.
Tobyn Tannehill had a big year for Big Spring as a junior, throwing for 2,409 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushing for 1,453 yards and 17 scores.
