Louisiana girls basketball playoffs reach semifinals

Girls basketball titles in seven classes will be decided this week in the Ladies' Top 28 Tournament at Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.

In the Class 5A semifinals, Archbishop Chapelle (Metairie) will face St. Thomas More (Lafayette) and Denham Springs will meet Southwood (Shreveport).

Jennings will face St. Michael (Baton Rouge) in Class 4A along with Vandebilt Catholic (Houma) against Bastrop (Bastrop, La.).

Class 3A has Loyola College Prep (Shreveport) versus St. James and Crowley against Avoyelles (Moreauville).

Class 2A pits Donaldsonville and Winnfield and Pickering (Leesville) and Ville Platte.

Louisiana New Tech (Plain Dealing) and Tensas (St. Joseph) will meet in one Class 1A semifinal with White Castle and Arcadia matched in the other.

Class B has Fairview (Grant) against Rapides (Lecompte) and Pitkin versus Hathaway (Jennings). In Class C, Cotton Valley and Starks will play for the right to meet the Saline vs. Plainview (Glenmora) winner.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS ROLL
Top-seeded Peabody (Alexandria) began defense of its Class 4A boys state basketball championship with a 73-27 victory over 32nd-seeded Fair Park (Shreveport). Dee Wagner matched Fair Park's output with a game-high 27 points. Peabody's Josh Ivory scored 14 points, while Fair Park's Savion Brown scored a team-high seven points.
