Southern Columbia Area (Catawissa,Pa.) has won four consecutive state championships, 60 straight games and coach Jim Roth became the all-time wins leader in the state. Those numbers equal a No. 1 ranking in the final 2020 MaxPreps small school high school football rankings.
Under the legendary Roth, Southern Columbia Area's fourth straight Class AA championships added to the state record 11 overall titles. Roth's 12 wins this year gives him 456 in his career (456-63-2), pushing him two victories past George Curry, mostly at Berwick. The 60 straight wins, including one by forfeit, is the second-longest active streak in the nation behind 71 from Caledonia (Minn.). The 60 straight wins are No. 2 all-time in Pennsylvania behind Clairton, which had 66 between 2009-13. The Tigers moved ahead of Central Bucks West (Doylestown,Pa.) and Bishop Guilfoyle (Altoona, Pa.), both of which had 59-game win streaks.
The Tigers dominated on the field in 2020, averaging 53 points during the 59 on-field wins while giving up nine points a game. Southern Columbia Area defeated Wilmington (New Wilmington, Pa.) 42-14 in the 2020 Class AA championship game. The Tigers have 55.6 points in the MaxPreps football ratings, finishing over a point ahead of No. 2 Holland Hall (Tulsa, Okla.), the Oklahoma Class 3A state champion.
Canadian (Texas), the Texas 3A Division 2 state champion, edged out Jim Ned (Tuscola, Texas), the Texas Class 3A-I champion, and Andale (Kan.), the Kansas Class 3A state champion, for third place. Jim Ned and Andale tied for fourth.
The top 100 teams are listed with their overall record and MaxPreps rating. Teams who won state championships are marked with an asterisk. Small Schools generally play in enrollment divisions with less than 1,000 students.
