View on YouTubeOne of the fascinating stories of the 2014-15 high school girls basketball season will be the development of 6-foot-9
Cypress Woods (Cypress, Texas) junior
Nancy Mulkey.
The Houston area also gave rise to former Baylor star and current Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner – a transcendent talent at 6-8. That association has led to plenty to speculate as to whether Mulkey can have the same type of impact.
Despite modest high school stats, she showed enough promise over the summer to earn a spot on USA Basketball's U17 FIBA World Championship team. She played in all seven games as the United States captured gold.
In five games with stats reported to MaxPreps so far this season, Mulkey is averaging 5.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocked shots per game. She grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds in the season opener against Atascocita.
Don't be misled by the numbers, however. Cypress Woods is loaded, including the latest star Ogwumike sister, Erica. Additionally, the Wildcats are 7-0 and hammering opponents by an average margin of 30 points per game.
Cypress Woods went 32-6 and reached the Class 5A semifinals a year ago.
Mulkey, pegged as a Top 25 junior by ESPNW, committed to Oklahoma last month. She had her pick of college basketball powers, including Baylor, Connecticut, Duke and Louisville.
