High school football: Arizona quarterback Gage Baker ties national record for touchdown passes in a season with 91

In state championship loss, Paradise Honors senior throws seven touchdown passes to match Corey Robinson of Kentucky, Jake Browning of California.

Gage Baker of Paradise Honors (Surprise, Ariz.) tied a national high school football record Saturday night by bringing his season total for touchdown passes to 91. The senior quarterback will share the record with Corey Robinson of Lone Oak (Paducah, Ky.), who reached that number in 2007, and Jake Browning of Folsom (Calif.), who got there in 2014.

Baker's memory will likely be bittersweet as Paradise Honors (11-3) couldn't keep pace with Sabino (Tucson) in the Arizona 3A state championship game, falling 68-46. The 6-foot-1 signal caller did all he could with 517 yards through the air and seven touchdown passes.


In addition to Baker's record for touchdown passes, he finished with 6,040 yards on the season – the third-highest total in national history.

Last week in a 72-56 semifinal win over Valley Christian, Baker completed 44 of 54 pass attempts for 656 yards and nine touchdowns. He threw for a season-high 10 TDs in a September win over Show Low.

According to the MaxPreps National High School Football Record Book, Baker is just the ninth quarterback to throw for 75 touchdowns or more in a season and the third along with Robinson and Browning to go over 90.
