Video: Chris Helbig throws for 607 yards, 8 TDsHighlands (North Highlands, Calif.) is off to a strong start, scoring a combined 150 points in its first two wins. Newcomer Isaiah Tenette, one of the top basketball players in the Sacramento area, is a big reason why.
As the Scots' quarterback, Tenette exploded for 465 rushing yards last week in an 84-43 win over Mira Loma. In doing so, Tenette ran for more yards in one game than any Highland rusher did all of last season. In two games, Highlands has run for more yards (1,222) than it did all of last year (1,136).
Tenette, who averaged 24 points per game as a junior on the Highlands basketball team last year, heads this week's list of national stat stars. His rushing effort, which also included seven touchdowns, is the top rushing performance of the week.
Meanwhile, Glendale's Alex Huston is off to an incredible start as a varsity starter. While Huston saw some time with the Kenton (Ohio) varsity as a freshman, he started his first three varsity games as a transfer at Glendale (Springfield, Mo.) under former Kenton coach Mike Mauk.
In three games, Huston has thrown for 1,702 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is also averaging 66 attempts and 43 completions. For comparison, Maty Mauk of Kenton, the nation's all-time yardage passing leader, threw for just 730 yards in his first three varsity starts (as a freshman) and Jake Browning of Folsom, the nation's all-time touchdown passing leader, had 16 touchdown passes in his first three games.
In a 71-58 loss to West Plains last week, Huston completed 43 of 68 passes for 625 yards and eight touchdowns. He had the top passing performance in the nation this week.
