El Toro quarterback Trey Tinsley needed to pack down his right shoulder with ice after completing 50 passes in 75 attempts.

Trey Tinsley was the backup quarterback for El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) last year, sitting behind one of the nation's more prolific passers in Conner Manning. Tinsley obviously learned a thing or two from watching the all-state quarterback as he completed 50 of 75 passes for 512 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-35 win over Villa Park last week.
The 50 completions and the 75 attempts would be California state records, based on the seventh edition of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book. Further research showed that the 50 completions were not a national record, as was reported by the National Federation of High Schools Record Book. The book says the mark is 47 set by Grant Sherman of Kenton (Ohio) last year but Billy VandeMerkt of Riverside Brookfield in Illinois had 54 in one game and 56 in another. Also, Doug Huff's National High School Football Record Book lists Brian Parrish of Henrietta (Texas) with the record of 48. Curiously, Joe Lee Smith's Texas High School Football History website does not list Parrish at all, but it does list three other quarterbacks with 48 completions.
Meanwhile, Matthew Williams of Lancaster Christian Academy is believed to have set a Tennessee state record for passing yards in a game with his 617-yard effort last week. The previous record was held by Kenton Evans of Westwood with 597 yards.
In Michigan, Nate Drew of Chavez Academy set a reported state record with 18 receptions. The previous record, according to the Michigan Football Coaches Association website, was 17 by Brendan Howe of Gross Pointe South.
Finally, Chase VanSchoyck of North Central had his final rushing totals against Eastern Green adjusted to 581 yards on 22 carries. According to North Central coach Travis Nolting, films of the game showed him with 13 more yards than the totals reported earlier this week.
"We watched the film four times to make sure we got it right," said Nolting. "He even came out of the game with eight minutes left in the third quarter. He's the best player I've ever coached and a definite Division I talent."
