Video:Top 10 Plays of the Week // Week 1
See the top plays from around the country from the new year.
It was a quiet week for the Xcellent 25, with only one major change — Pike knocked previous No. 22 North Central out of the rankings — but the usual round of Martin Luther King Day, Jr., weekend events promise to shake things up for next week.
Three ranked teams, plus several top-shelf California teams, will be at St. Mary's of Stockton on Saturday and Monday, and though No. 1 Archbishop Mitty and No. 6 St. Mary's won't play each other, the Rams will take on No. 21 Centennial on Saturday, and after two competitive league games, Mitty will take on solid Carondelet squad.
The Music City Classic in Nashville is highlighted by a face-off between No. 7 Hamilton Heights and No. 10 Mercer County, though No. 4 Riverdale will be challenged by Winder-Barrow.
But there will be quality matchups between quality teams all over the country this weekend, so check your local listings for the best games near you, so seriously consider spending a (very) few bucks and a few hours supporting girls' high school basketball.
If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
(Note: Teams that wish to be recognized either locally or nationally should make sure their information – schedule, results, roster, coach, etc. — is up to date on MaxPreps. If you have any issues, please contact coachsupport@maxpreps.com.)

1. (Last week 1) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), 13-0Archbishop Mitty will travel to No. 6 St. Mary's of Stockton this weekend — but not to play California's second-best team. Those two are on a collision course in postseason, and have already played once (Mitty prevailed at the Nike TOC), so there's no impetus for a rematch.
2. (2) St. John's (Washington, D.C.), 12-1The big story was last week's road win against No. 5 Paul VI, but the tough Washington Catholic Athletic Conference slog continues with 9-1 Bishop Ireton on Sunday.
3. (3) Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.), 10-0After disposing of South Shore (which has a win over No. 14 Long Island Lutheran) and slipping past St. Francis Prep 45-40, Christ the King travels Friday to Connecticut to take on 9-1 Enfield in the Hoophall Classic.
4. (4) Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), 17-1Olivia Nelson-Ododa is one of the top prep players in the country, and she gives
Winder-Barrow (Winder, Ga.) a puncher's chance Monday at Music City Classic in Nashville — and remember, Winder-Barrow only lost to No. 3 Christ the King by three.
5. (5) Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.), 12-2That 20-point win over Manasquan was impressive, but there's no rest for teams in the DMV: No. 17 Bishop McNamara is on tap Friday.
6. (6) St. Mary's (Stockton, Calif.), 14-2There's no way we're going to miss the opportunity to get a mascot like the Fighting Frogs into the story, as
Ribet Academy (Los Angeles) (and 6-9
Andrea Aquino) play St. Mary's on Monday, but the bigger test will be against No. 21 Centennial on Saturday.
7. (7) Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (Chattanooga, Tenn.), 14-2Teams that constantly challenge themselves, especially on the road, are teams that belong in the Xcellent 25 — as long as they win, of course. Hamilton Heights ducks no one, and No. 10 Mercer County is up Monday at the Music City Classic in Nashville.
8. (8) Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, Md.), 11-3Riverdale Baptist takes a break with no games until Jan. 18.
9. (9) Duncanville (Texas), 27-1DeSoto lost twice at the Sandra Meadows Classic after Christmas, knocking the Texas team out of the Xcellent 25. But both losses came to 20-win teams, and DeSoto can erase a lot of the sting Friday by upsetting Duncanville. Then again, Duncanville hasn't lost since Nov. 11.
10. (10) Mercer County (Harrodsburg, Ky.), 15-1The big one is Monday against No. 7 Hamilton Heights, but Mercer Country can't get caught napping against 14-4 Wesleyan Christian Academy on Sunday if it wants to retain a Top 10 ranking.
11. (11) Winter Haven (Fla.), 15-0It took overtime for Winter Haven to beat Nease last week. That gives hope to 11-3 Fort Myers, Friday's opponent. Hope, however, should not be confused with a plan.
12. (12) Southeast Raleigh (N.C.), 14-0Southeast Raleigh draws 11-3 Enloe on Wednesday, but the real challenges won't come until North Carolina's postseason.
13. (13) Hoover (Ala.), 19-0Hoover puts its ranking on the line Saturday when it travels to play 13-1 Holy Innocents Episcopal on a neutral court. Note that Holy Innocents has lost only to Georgia power Buford.
14. (15) Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.), 7-3If there were doubts that Long Island Lutheran deserved to be in the top 15, the 50-46 win over previous No. 14 Roland Park laid them to rest. Next up are top teams from Connecticut and West Virginia.
15. (16) Princess Anne (Virginia Beach, Va.), 11-1Princess Anne moves up a notch, and shouldn't be threatened until Lake Taylor shows up on the other side of the scorer's table Jan. 20.
16. (14) Roland Park Country (Baltimore), 13-2A 50-46 loss to Long Island Lutheran drops Roland Park two spots, and 10-1 McDonogh would like nothing better than to continue the trend with a win Wednesday.
17. (17) Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.), 11-1In the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, a chance for redemption is always just a few games away. Bishop McNamara can vault up the standings Friday — if it can beat No. 5 Paul VI. At Paul VI.
18. (18) Baldwin (N.Y.), 6-1There are some who aren't convinced Baldwin deserves this ranking, and the game Saturday against No. 25 St. Frances Academy will either silence the doubters or prove them right.
19. (19) Edison Academy (Detroit) 6-0Last week's game against once-beaten Carman-Ainsworth was postponed, but the real test comes Jan. 20 at Africentric.
20. (20) St. John-Vianney (Holmdel, N.J.), 9-0St. John-Vianney has gotten a couple of breaks along the way to its No. 20 ranking, but New Jersey is full of good teams — and one of them, Rumson-Fair Haven, is on the schedule next Tuesday.
21. (21) Centennial (Las Vegas), 15-2Centennial never settles for Nevada opposition, and after taking on No. 6 St. Mary's Saturday — in St. Mary's home gym, no less — Southern California power Harvard-Westlake is Monday's opponent.
22. (NR) Campbell County (Alexandria, Ky.), 11-1The only newcomer this week is Kentucky's Campbell County, which lost only to No. 10 Mercer County, and has a big win over Montini Catholic, which looks to be Illinois' best.
23. (23) Westlake (Atlanta), 13-1Since Westlake's upcoming schedule is hardly challenging, the only way for Atlanta's best to move up in the rankings is for teams above them to lose.
24. (24) Eastview (Apple Valley, Minn.), 12-0Farmington could challenge Eastview on Friday, but the game is in the friendly confines. Expect Eastview to stay unbeaten — at least until Hopkins shows up in postseason.
25. (25) St. Frances Academy (Baltimore), 7-3St. Frances is another team that doesn't duck anyone. No. 18. Baldwin is up Saturday, followed by No. 16 Roland Park, and very tough McDonogh on Jan. 19.
Dropped out: No. 22 North Central (Indianapolis)
