High school basketball rankings: Kentucky state champion Lyon County finishes No. 1 in Small Town Top 25

Behind 5,000-point scorer Travis Perry, Lyon County became smallest school in Bluegrass State to win title in nearly 60 years.

Lyon County (Eddyville) struck a blow for small town high school basketball teams across the country when it defeated Harlan County (Harlan) 67-58 to capture the Kentucky's single-class state championship last month.

With an enrollment of just 293 students, Lyon County became the first small town team in nearly 60 years to win the state championship.

As a result, Lyon County finishes as the No. 1 team in the Small Town Top 25.

Travis Perry, the state's all-time leading scorer with 5,481 points, led the way with 27 points in the championship game and was named the Sweet 16 MVP. Perry was also named Mr. Basketball.

If not for Lyon County's surprising win, Brownstown Central (Brownstown, Ind.) would have been the clear choice for the No. 1 ranking. The Braves captured the Class 2A state championship and edged out New Madrid County Central (New Madrid, Mo.) for the No. 2 spot.

Teams qualifying for the Small Town Top 25 must have fewer than 1,000 students and located in a town with a population of under 10,000. The rankings are based on the MaxPreps computer ratings and state championship performances.
